The best time and importance of jaw retraction correction
2025-04-07
The best time to correct a child’s mandibular retrusion is usually between the ages of 6 to 14, especially when they are going through the phase of replacing baby teeth with permanent ones and their bones are still developing. At this stage, the jawbones are more malleable, and treatment can guide their growth effectively.
01 Why is early correction important?
Bones are still growing and easier to adjust: A child’s bones are still developing, so it’s easier to correct the jaw position during this time. After they stop growing, it becomes much harder to make changes.
Avoid more complicated treatments later: If the underbite is not corrected early, it may worsen, and the child might need more complex treatments like surgery in the future.
Improving eating and speaking: An underbite can affect a child’s ability to chew and speak. Early correction helps ensure proper eating and speaking functions.
Reducing psychological stress: An underbite can sometimes affect the child’s appearance, leading to self-esteem issues. Early correction can help boost confidence and reduce concerns about their appearance.
Preventing other dental problems: If not corrected, the child may end up with crooked teeth, or it could cause tooth wear and other problems. Early treatment can prevent these issues.
02 Treatment methods
For children, common treatments include functional appliances (devices that help guide jaw growth) or braces/ Clear Aligners to improve bite alignment.
If you notice your child has an underbite, it’s a good idea to do the professional check up early to assess whether treatment is needed.
