Understanding Effects of Chronic Allergy

2025-02-10

1. What can happen when I suffer from allergic rhinitis?

 Immediate Symptoms

  • Nasal Congestion with blocked or runny nose.

  • Sneezing and Itching in the nose, throat, or even eyes.

  • Post-Nasal Drip leading to throat irritation or a cough.

If these symptoms persist for one or two or even three weeks, there is no cause for concern. The situation is different if it is a long-term problem. Then there are effects on the respiratory organs and the sleep quality. Especially the teeth and in children the position of the teeth can be affected.

2. What can happen when I suffer from chronic allergic rhinitis

Effects on the Respiratory System

  • Sinus Infections: Nasal inflammation can block sinus drainage, leading to sinusitis or even nasal polyps;

  • Chronic Throat Irritation: Post-nasal drip can irritate the throat over time, leading to a persistent sore throat or hoarseness;

  • Bronchitis, Lung infection and Asthma Exacerbation : allergic rhinitis can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms; the constant postnasal drip can cause bronchial infections and even pneumonia.

Sleep Issues:

  • Sleep Disruptions: Congestion and post-nasal drip can make it hard to sleep comfortably, leading to frequent awakenings.

  • Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Nasal congestion can increase snoring and, in some cases, contribute to obstructive sleep apnea, which can have long-term health implications.

  • Daytime Fatigue: Poor sleep quality can cause daytime drowsiness, reduced alertness, and difficulty concentrating.

Oral and Dental Complications

  • Mouth breathing: chronic congestion from allergic rhinitis can lead to chronic mouth breathing which can dry out the oral cavity and reduces saliva. A dry mouth increases the risks of gum disease and cavities.

  • Jaw misalignment: mouth breathing especially in children during sleep can lead to a forward or downward shift in the jaw and potentially contributing to a misalignment of the teeth.

  • Grinding of teeth: an altered breathing pattern can create tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles and cause teeth grinding especially during sleep.

What can I do?

  • Identifying and managing allergic rhinitis effectively can help these impacts.

  • Treatments such as antihistamines, decongestants, nasal corticosteroids, nose rinses or immunotherapy (allergy shots) can relieve symptoms and prevent complications.

  • Treating nasal congestion and restoring nasal  breathing are essential for oral health, reducing jaw strain and encouraging a natural jaw position.
