2024-12-02
Did you know that know “Movember” is an annual global campaign in November that encourages men to grow mustaches and engage in activities to raise awareness about men’s health.
1. History of Movember
Movember originated in Australia in 2003 when a group of friends decided to grow mustaches to raise awareness about prostate cancer and depression in men. Now it is a global movement that has raised more than 500 million USD to fund men’s health projects around the world.
2. Why is this important?
Men on average die 6 years earlier than women. The campaign focuses on the 3 biggest health issues that contribute to this gender gap.
Mental Health: 80% of suicides worldwide are committed by men. The reasons are complex, but shame, loneliness and alcohol use are known factors.
Prostate cancer: The most common type of cancer in men is prostate cancer. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. There are screening tests that can help with early detection.
Testicular cancer: Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men aged 15-45 years. It is important to examine regularly and look out for signs like testicle pain.
3. What can you do?
