The flu, like COVID, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. It's a common illness that typically presents with fever, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache and fatigue.
If you're healthy, you'll usually recover from the flu in about a week. However, the flu can be dangerous for people who are 65 or older, have chronic health conditions, or have weakened immune systems as it can lead to complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis and heart failure.
There are several things you can do to avoid catching the flu.
1.Get vaccinated
The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from the flu. It's important to get vaccinated early before the flu season starts. In China, flu season typically occurs from October to March but can vary from year to year.
Quadrivalent flu vaccines are currently available at Parkway.
2. Washing your hands frequently
Washing your hands frequently is one of the most important things you can do to prevent the spread of germs, including the flu virus. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You should also wash your hands after you use the bathroom, blow your nose, cough, or sneeze.
3. Cover your cough and sneeze
When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. If you don't have a tissue, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow. This will help to prevent the spread of germs.
4. Stay away from sick people
If you know someone who is sick with the flu, it's important to stay away from them. This will help to prevent the spread of the virus.
5. Get enough rest
Getting enough rest is important for your overall health, and it can also help you to avoid getting sick. Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
6. Eat a healthy diet
Eating a healthy diet can help to boost your immune system, which can help you to fight off the flu. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
7. Avoid touching your face
It's important to avoid touching your face, as this can allow the flu virus to enter your body.
8. If you think you might have the flu, see a doctor
If you think you might have the flu, it's important to see a doctor. The doctor can prescribe medication to help you get better.
For those with a chronic health condition, it is also recommended to discuss with our doctors on how to optimise your overall health beforehand.
